Communications Director /Fisheries Biologist: Erin Loury is a fisheries biologist and science communication specialist who works in California and Southeast Asia. She manages FISHBIO’s website, blog, newsletter, and social media channels; assists with video production, and coordinates educational and community outreach. Additionally, she helps coordinate FISHBIO’s Mekong program, including directing communications for the Mekong Fish Network and the Wonders of the Mekong project, and has worked on projects to establish community-managed Fish Conservation Zones in Laos and Myanmar, standardize fisheries research methods, and engage community participation in fisheries research and management.

Description: Students will meet with communications director and fisheries biologist Erin Loury for a presentation, discussion, and Q&A about FISHBIO’s fisheries research, monitoring, and conservation work in California, Southeast Asia, and Costa Rica (10:00-11:00). This will be followed by a discussion and demonstration of FISHBIO’s communications activities through blog posts, video, and social media (11:00-11:30). Students will then meet with fisheries biologist Jack Eschenroeder, who will explain some of the technologies FISHBIO regularly uses in the field, and demonstrate video review of footage from one of FISHBIO’s fish monitoring cameras. Time and weather permitting, we may take a quick trip to the San Lorenzo River (5 min drive), where Jack will demonstrate the collection of water samples for environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis (11:30-12:30). We will take the students to lunch at the Seabright Brewery downstairs from our office (12:30-1:30).

Stanford Linear Accelerator (2575 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, CA 94025)

Staff Scientist: Study of enzyme structure and function for the design of antibiotics.

Description: Students will get an exposure to the various facilities and a glimpse of the processes in antibiotic design. They will see various enzyme and protein structures. If time permits, we will go through our recent work on checkpoint inhibitors for cancer.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Student must be a JUNIOR or SENIOR. The age restriction is due to the safety related issues (mainly X-rays). Unfortunately, we have to follow this. Unlike Stanford campus which is not restricted, SLAC is National Facility of DOE and it require special access/permissions. Host will require full name, ages and country of citizenship.
