Deputy District Attorney, Human Trafficking Unit: Trial attorney for Human Trafficking and General Felony trial units. Cases range from felony human trafficking of adults and minors to auto theft and burglaries. Work closely with law enforcement in investigations. Prepare and argue written motions before the court and conduct jury trials.

Description: Receive a presentation on the function of a Deputy District Attorney and the new Community Prosecution Unit. A trip to Judge's chambers will allow students to interact with the judge. Observation of a preliminary hearing or trial is also likely. Bring a note pad and an open mind.

Librarian: Cupertino Library is a large, busy library with over 50 staff. As Community Librarian, I oversee our facility and all of our operations, as well as network with the Cupertino community. Our librarian staff assist patrons with information questions, plan and host programs, update our library collection, and visit locations throughout the city spreading information about the library. Our clerks and pages assist patrons with their library account, handle all our returned materials, and help put those materials back on our library shelves. Attendees will have a chance to interact with all of these types of staff during the job shadow day.

Description: Attendees will have the opportunity to work alongside library staff and learn about the operations and challenges of a busy public library. Included will be observing a story time program, working on our information desks, helping process library materials, and learning about library policy and procedures.

Superior Court Judge Saban: Preside over a felony case management arraignment, pretrial, motions, and preliminary hearing calendar. Rule on pre-trial motions, and manage cases.

Description: Students will have an opportunity to observe court, most likely a criminal pre-trial or trial calendar. Other possibilities include motions, jury selection, sentencing, depending on the specific case being heard by the court on that day. Judge will explain the justice system and the roles of different individuals in the court.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Students should be prepared that long lines in front can form going through metal detectors. They will need to go through this line. They can have phones, but should not bring separate cameras into the court. Cell phones to be completely turned off in court and students should not have them out in court. During observation, students need to quietly observe, but the judge will take time on breaks or after to explain the process and answer questions. Parents and students should be advised that I cannot predict what case I will be hearing but many may be of serious subject matter, such as homicide or sexual assault.

Superior Court Judge Sylva: Preside over Mental Health cases. Work with community and justice partners to provide treatment, supervision, accountability and structured living plans for individuals accused of crimes who also have a co-occurring mental health and/or substance addiction.

Description: Students will have an opportunity to observe a therapeutic treatment court in session. The goal of these courts is to provide support in the community with judicial oversight to reduce recidivism and encourage participants to remain medication compliant and refrain from illegal substances.

Cell phones to be completely turned off in court and students should not have them out while court is in session. No cameras. During observation, students need to quietly observe, but the judge will take time on breaks to explain the process and answer questions. Parents and students should be advised that the subject matter is domestic violence and the content may be sensitive.

Manages business functions as well as the overall operations of a law office and general responsibility for financial planning and controls, personnel administration, and systems and physical facilities.

Description: Students will shadow different members of a law firm: lawyer, paralegal, secretary and administrative support. They will shadow each position for approximately a half hour. They will also participate in a mock trial and will be asked to act as a witness, attorney and/or judge. Students will be participating in a mock trial and will be required to read the materials prior to their arrival so that they are fully prepared for the hands-on activity. Materials will be emailed in advance.
